Examining the Predictive Power of the Coach-Athlete Relationship on Sportsmanship Orientation from the Perspective of Volleyball Players

This study examines the relationship between the coach-athlete relationship and the orientation toward sportsmanship, aiming to determine the predictive role of the coach-athlete relationship on the orientation toward sportsmanship. In line with this objective, the study was conducted within the scope of a correlational survey model. The research group consists of 154 licensed volleyball players aged 18 and over. The data collection tools used in the study were the “Personal Information Form” created by the researcher, the “Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire”, and the “Multidimensional Sportspersonship Orientation Scale”. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation, and simple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The analyses revealed a positive relationship between the coach-athlete relationship and sportsmanship orientation. Furthermore, the analyses showed that the coach-athlete relationship significantly predicted sportsmanship orientation. When the analyses conducted in terms of demographic variables were examined; no significant differences were observed in the coach-athlete relationship according to gender, duration of working with the coach, and education level, while a negative relationship was found according to sports history. When sportsmanship orientation was examined, a difference in favor of women was observed in terms of the gender variable, while a negative relationship was found in terms of sports history. However, no significant relationship was found between the duration of working with the coach and the level of education. In conclusion, the coach-athlete relationship is positively and significantly associated with sportsmanship orientation and significantly predicts sportsmanship orientation.
