Effect of Plyometric Training on Basic Motor Characteristics in Adolescent Volleyball Athletes

This study was designed to determine the effect of plyometric training, designed for 6 weeks and 2 days a week, on speed, vertical jump, agility, and leg strength parameters in adolescent volleyball players who are new to the sport. A total of 18 volunteer athletes participated in the study, n=9 in the control group and n=9 in the experimental group. The control group received routine volleyball training two days a week. The experimental group received a plyometric training program two days a week in addition to volleyball training. Weight, height, age, and body mass index (BMI) measurements were taken from the volleyball players, and changes in speed, standing long jump, vertical jump, agility, back strength, and leg strength parameters were examined at the end of the 6-week application. The Shapiro-Wilk test was applied to determine the normality of the data distribution, and the results were analyzed, revealing a normal distribution. Accordingly, a Repeated Measures ANOVA design model was applied to determine whether there were differences in pre-test and post-test values, time-group interaction, and between groups in the plyometric training applied. According to the findings of the study, statistically significant differences were found between the control and experimental groups in pre-test and post-test measurements of vertical jump, 30-meter sprint, standing long jump, T-test, leg strength, and waist strength; as well as in time-group interaction and between-group values. In conclusion, it was determined that plyometric training combined with volleyball training improved speed, vertical jump, standing long jump, agility, back and leg strength parameters in male adolescent volleyball players who were just starting to play. Therefore, plyometric training can be used as an alternative strength training method.
