Sustainability in Recreation: Scale Development Study

The purpose of this study was to develop a measurement instrument aimed at identifying the sustainability-related expectations of individuals participating in recreational activities and to reveal the essential components for sustainability in the context of recreation. The population of the study consisted of individuals participating in recreational activities at youth centers. The sample comprised 892 individuals aged 18 and over who participated in recreational activities at youth centers in Ankara during the 2023–2024 period, selected through a convenience sampling method, which is one of the non-probability sampling techniques. As a result of the analyses, a four-factor scale consisting of 17 items was developed, with the factors labeled as “individual sustainability,” “social sustainability,” “organizational sustainability,” and “ethical sustainability”. The structural model of the “Sustainability in Recreation Scale” yielded results consistent with the accepted fit indices, indicating that it is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring the level of sustainability-related components in recreation.
