The Road to the Olympics: A Narrative Investigation

This study examines the experiences of Turkish athlete Oğuz Uyar, who represented Turkey in the 4x100-meter relay at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, using a narrative approach. The aim of the research is to understand the social, physical, and psychological challenges Uyar faced during his preparation for the Olympics, as well as the methods he employed to overcome them. The study employs narrative research, a qualitative methodology, with data collected through semi-structured interviews. The interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis method and five main themes were identified: initiation into athletics, Olympic experience and unexpected opportunities, family and social support, and psychological and physical struggles. Uyar started athletics upon the encouragement of his teachers and was quickly selected for the national team. The Olympics, rather than being a planned goal, emerged as an unexpected opportunity. The postponement of the Olympics provided him with additional preparation time, allowing him to improve his performance. Furthermore, the support from his family and social circle strengthened as he achieved greater success. However, the challenges of intense physical training, psychological pressures, and lack of professional support were also evident. Despite these challenges, his coach's guidance and his accomplishments bolstered Uyar's motivation to continue in athletics. The study highlights the individual and systemic challenges Turkish athletes face during their preparation for the Olympics and emphasizes the need for improving sports infrastructure and strengthening psychological support mechanisms. These findings provide valuable insights for enhancing sports policies and athlete development in Turkey.
