The Effect of 5th Grade Physical Education and Sports Curriculum on Biomotoric Characteristics of Students (Erzurum Case)

The objective of this study is to assess the alterations in biomotor characteristics of 5th grade students who will experience physical education and sports lessons with a physical education teacher for the first time, and to evaluate the course's contribution to the students' biomotor development. A total of 219 fifth-grade students participated in this study, comprising 105 females and 114 males. Prior to the assessment, height and weight measurements were recorded to assess the anthropometric characteristics of the participating students; the short form of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Motor Proficiency Test 2 (BOT-2) was administered to evaluate biomotor characteristics. The data collected in the study was analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 software package. The statistical significance levels were established at p<0.005 and p<0.001. A notable disparity was observed in fine motor skills, fine motor adaptation, dexterity, bilateral coordination, balance, speed and agility, upper extremity coordination, strength, and overall scores between male and female students participating in the study. A notable disparity was observed in fine motor skills pre-test and fine motor adaptation skills between females and males, as well as in manual dexterity, bilateral coordination, balance, speed and agility, upper extremity strength, and overall scores of male students relative to female students. It is believed that the biomotor and psychomotor development of children would be enhanced if physical education and sports classes are taught by qualified physical education teachers from the early stages.
